Townes Van Zandt's version (in 1966) is one I like a lot. He was an old soul even at age 22.

Totally agree. Probably should have given it a full entry in my list. Townes covering Hank is like catnip for me. As I'm sure you know, they both died on New Year's Day, 44 years apart. Maybe the song requires a young man (or woman) with an old soul--Hank himself was just shy of 26 when he recorded it. Hopefully some Townes content to come! Just re-watched "Heartworn Highways."
